Elora Multiplex
Second 1127 sq.ft. | Third 1036 sq.ft.
Situated near Elora Gorge, this 3-storey stone building from the 1800s was converted into apartments. There were 2 units which formed the second and third floor of the building. However, the third floor was within the roofline so the ceiling height was limited and there was only 1 skylight in each unit for natural light. The second floors of the units were reconfigured to create large kitchens with 4-seat islands and open living and dining space. The bathrooms were converted to powder rooms with stacked laundry machines. The third floor was expanded by removing the existing roof and building up a full height space with 12’ vaulted ceilings which gave space for 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom per unit. South-facing balconies were added to the primary bedrooms which overlook Irvine Creek. Unit 11 maintained a portion of the open to below space to create a bridge to the balcony whereas Unit 12 took the open to below space to create 2 bedrooms on the third floor. The new third floor was clad in a black vertical siding to reduce its massing and it ties into an existing roof band on top of the 200 year old stone face of the building. The gable dormers and symmetry in the windows relate to the existing building below to maintain its original character.
